Case Study: Andromeda

Current Case: Andromeda
Challenge: Restore Super Yacht
rigging after 10 years of cruising. Provide on time,
cost-effective solution that ensures performance
and restores original rigging aesthetics.
Yacht Specs: 141 - foot Perini Navi, launched in
1991
Shipyard: Orams Marine, Auckland,
New Zealand
Navtec Rigging Specified: Nitronic
- 50 rod rigging, and Navtec components
When Matrix Masts in Auckland, New Zealand was contracted
for a mast refit job on the 141-foot Perini Navi
Andromeda, they turned to Navtec to partner with
them on the project. The job called for a complete
refit of the Main and Mizzen masts, converting them
from In Mast furling to In Boom furling. Navtec's
job was to fully refit all of the rigging on the
yacht, which had recently cruised to New Zealand
for the 2000 America's Cup.
The job was to inspect, recondition and ship all
rigging back to Auckland in time for assembly and
stepping. When Andromeda arrived for the refit,
it had the same rigging with which it had been launched
in 1991. Ten years of cruising had begun to show
on the in-house designed rigging.
The Navtec team shipped the rigging back to world
headquarters in Connecticut, USA, where it was inspected
by Navtec's engineering department. Upon thorough
review, they assessed that after ten years of heavy
activity, all rods would need to be replaced. The
captain reviewed their findings and agreed. Additionally,
all screws in the turnbuckles were replaced and
all rod seats were re-machined with Navtec's new
geometry and seat head/design. The new Nitronic-50
rod bodies and components were either re-chromed
or re-polished.
When the final assembly of the rigging was complete,
it was individually wrapped and secured in container
to be shipped back to New Zealand to fulfill the
re-rigging component of Andromeda's refit. Navtec's
shipment arrived on-time with a written evaluation
for reference, drawings of replacement parts and
information on routine rod rigging maintenance.
Navtec's re-rig of Andromeda met the goals of the
project manager in terms of deadlines, budgets and
results. The crew of Andromeda now has the security
of rigging guaranteed to perform for many years
to come. |
